About Radiation Oncology
Radiation therapy is a very effective treatment for cancer, either alone or in combination with surgery and chemotherapy. In breast cancer, breast can be preserved by performing radiation therapy after tumor resection. Even with a total mastectomy, the cure rate can be increased by administering radiation therapy to the metastasized lymph nodes or the breast wall after removing the breast. For gynecological cancers such as uterine cancer and cervical cancer, radiation therapy is used to lower the recurrence rate after surgery. It is also used as a treatment method to improve various symptoms such as pain, bleeding, and spinal nerve pressure caused by cancer.
Radiation Oncology Equipment
    • LINAC : vitalBEAM (Varian, USA) / 6 DOF couch
    • CT Simulator : Lightning Aquilion (Canon)
    • Brachytherapy : Microselectron (Elekta)
    • Treatment Planning System : Eclipse (Varian), Velocity (Varian), MCO (Varian)
    • QA Equipment : Mobius (Varian), myQA (IBA), MPC (Varian), Matrix (IBA)

The Radiation Oncology Department at CHA Ilsan Medical Center is equipped with the latest medical equipment, vital beam (Varian) and brachytherapy (MicroSelectron, Elekta), which are essential for radiation therapy for gynecological cancer. A finely adjustable treatment table (6 Dimensional of Freedom Couch) is mounted on the vital beam to enable more precise treatment, three-dimensional intensity-modulated rotational radiation (Rapid Arc), intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), and three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy (3DCRT), image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) to treat while checking the location of the tumor by real-time cone beam CT imaging, and 4D Respiratory Gated RT to eliminate errors in tumor position caused by breathing. And the latest treatment technology, the Stereotactic Body RT, precisely treats small tumors in the body. Furthermore, the proximal radiation therapy device is applied to a gynecological tumor, and after inserting the device in an appropriate position, the isotope is placed in the device to irradiate radiation from a position close to the tumor, effectively reducing the radiation dose to surrounding organs and effectively treating the tumor. It is a treatment method that can precisely control the dose for the tumor and surrounding organs by using a device capable of three-dimensional treatment planning using CT, MRI, and etc.

The Radiation Oncology Department strives to ensure that those who need radiation therapy after being diagnosed with cancer receives therapy in a comfortable environment, and provides customized treatment optimized for each patient.
In addition, by operating a cooperative system and multidisciplinary care system with the Gynecologic Oncology Center, Breast Center, and the Thyroid Cancer Center, experts from various departments are committed to work together to help patients choose the best treatment option.
